I LOVE MY TAN!

6/30/2009 01:00:00 PM Reporter: Nasty Tai Boogy 0 Responses
HONEY TAYLOR, AUTHOR
Honey Taylor is 21, beautiful, and living, on her own, TAN free and breezy in the California sun.

She hails from Bremerton, Washington. At the age of 19, she moved to the Bay Area where she met the man (or TAN) that inspired this book. With a few obstacles thrown in her way (being kicked out of beauty school, turning into an exotic dancer, barely being able to make ends meet), Honey turned her life around and started working with The Punany Poets.

At 20 she became intern to The Punany Poets Entertainment, LLC, but after only a few short months her business savvy, and theater production talents caused her to rise quickly to the position of Associate Producer of the 2009-2010 Black Love American Style Tour.

In the couple weeks of downtime, following her hectic tour schedule, Honey Taylor rediscovered her own artistic talents and redirected her attention to TANs toward her career. With the assistance of Punany Founder, Jessica Holter, Honey Taylor formed her own publishing company. I Love My TAN is her debut book, and is only the first of many works to come from Urban Maiden Press, a unique literary program addressing urban concerns, with raw honesty, humor and healing.

I Love My TAN, is a short guide on tryflin' men. Funny and raw this book is what any young woman needs to get schooled so that she won't end up hurt, confused or dooped by a TAN.
Oh before we move on, what is a TAN? If you’re pregnant and due in June along with your mans other baby mama but you were with him first, you already know. A TAN is a tryflin' ass nigguh.
Instead of wasting time trying to get the scoop from your mans other girlfriend OR his baby mama, come to Honey Taylor she's your friend with no drama. Giving you an honest approach on what's going on in the world of young love and heart break from first hand experience.
Complete with everything from in depth details on sexual transgressions to coddling jail birds with pointless love letters... to how to prevent your baby from becoming a TAN in training and real life stories from TANcer patients who may just live next door.
Let ME help YOU 'cause I couldn't help myself.

JORDAN CRAFTON, CEO/DIRECTOR OF JDC FILMS

22 year old Jordan Crafton from Uniondale, NY has big dreams. People say that he works too hard, he dreams too big, and that he is wasting his time trying to become one of the best. The negativity does not stop him at all. It actually keeps him motivated. Jordan is graduating Suma Cum Lade from the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management from the University of South Carolina in August and is currently a manager at the Red Lobster.

JDC Films is an upcoming grassroots film company started by Jordan Crafton in Uniondale, NY in the summer of 2005. JDC Films strives to bridge the gap between reality and fiction without appearing to commercial and cliché. We are striving to create films that are edgy, innovative, and thought provoking.

JDC Films has been a self-sufficient film company for two strong years. There target viewer demographic is 16-25 years old with the strongest support in South Carolina and New York. We have been appearing on the popular video-sharing network, YouTube since our inception three years ago. With over 18,000 views since 2006, and over 40,000 hits to the company's website in 2009, JDC Films has had a growing amount of supporters. (www.jdcfilmsonline.com)

My Block: Strong Island, JDC Films biggest movie to date, was premiered on March 24, 2008 at the Nickelodeon Theatre, February 3, 2009 at the Russell House Theater both in Columbia, SC where 170 people filled the seats in the Russell House Theater to all be inspired by this work, and on April 16, 2009 at SUNY Potsdam. Most recently premiered at Uniondale High School on June 5, 2009 where over 400 were in attendance. The night was covered both by News 12 and Newsday. Highlights from the night can be seen at www.jdcfilmsonline.com/myblockstrongisland

What makes My Block: Strong Island unique is that it focuses on the lives of 15 “average” kids, from a variety of lower middle class neighborhoods. At its deepest, My Block: Strong Island is about determination and the need to persevere in order to achieve goals. Its also about being steadfast and unmovable as dreamers take that next step forward no matter how difficult or frightening it may seem. Each step will culminate in a triumphant moment that brings them closer to their destiny. JDC Films has also received 3rd Place for the work, If You Only Knew, released in November 2007 in the Got Film festival in Columbia, SC.

“I have to make it, for my family is depending on me. I approach everyday the same, NEVER QUIT!!! I just want to make it in life and give back to those who have given so much to me in the past. I am a Child of God who understands and appreciates his everlasting love that abides in the covenant that he gives to all of his children. I’m in to meeting new people and making friends and all joining together to change the world and to pass your wildest imaginations. Anything is possible; all it takes is a dream, a work ethic, and most importantly God must be put first in everything for all blessings come from him.” - JDC

ON THE OREGON TRAIL...

6/18/2009 12:00:00 AM Reporter: Nasty Tai Boogy 0 Responses
CHOZE, RAPPER
While Portland, Oregon, is filled with talented hip hop artists, it has also been known as a city that’s difficult to break out of, especially for musicians seeking more national and international attention. But in the last few years there has been a growing hip hop movement of young rappers and producers trying to make their niche in the nation-wide music scene. One of the central players in this movement is Choze, a young rap artist seeking to be one of the best in Portland and to bring more attention and focus to the talent in this city.

Choze has been a fan of hip hop since the mid-90s: "I remember hearing my first rap song on the radio. It was "California Love" by 2Pac and Dr. Dre." Ever since then, he was hooked. At a younger age, Choze was a music fan but never seriously thought about rhyming and "wanted to be in the NBA growing up." He remembers smiling, "Me and my cousin Mase would play everyday… fierce rivalries which almost led to fist fights." But when Choze was only 12 years old, Mase started to freestyle while the two were working for the local paper, and this changed Choze’s focus to the creation and performance of music. Choze remembers asking his cousin how he could rhyme for so long: "Mase used to rhyme for 10 minutes straight without stopping, and his flow was always on point back then." That was the beginning of their musical partnership. Choze and his cousin (then known as "Lil’M") formed a duo rap group called "Lil’ Playaz" with Mase ghostwriting Choze’s rhymes and the two recording on the Karaoke machine at Choze’s house.

Inspired by his cousin’s coaching and by all forms of hip hop (from the Boom Bap Era in the late 80s to the Flash Era in the late 90s), started developing his talent and coming up with rhymes on his own. Of course, it hasn’t always been an easy journey musically or personally, and Choze’s authenticity comes from his experience as a young person of both the beauty and the tragedies of life. Going through the passing of several family members, including his older brother and father, has only strengthened Choze’s understanding of the place music has in his life and has poised him more than ever to make something happen for himself and his family: "I know that all of my family members in heaven are pulling for me and giving me strength to make a success of myself."

This success includes moving forward to break out of the moniker of "Mixtape Rapper" Choze notes, "There was a point in my life, and I’m still trying to get out of it, being labeled as a mixtape rapper because I never really had a producer to be my right hand man and to help me craft my sound. I’ve always had to do industry beats up until this point." Now gaining increased attention via the MySpace Music community and word of mouth in his hometown, Choze believes he has what it takes to be the first young rap artist to break out of his state. As part of this break-out, Choze has released 3 mixtapes, Appeared on over 10 mixtapes from various up and coming DJ's across the country and he is now back in the studio, equipped with new producers, Currently working on a new mixtape as well as an EP titled "A Versatile Mind", All while creating his own record label Neu Beginin Records along with friends and fellow MC's Saint & Wingate (The duo are better known as Tru Quality).

Choze’s mission is to put his music, the local hip hop scene, and Portland on the map. This mission drives him to keep his music real and original, also to reach out to fellow artists and fans who share his passions and goals of making Portland bigger and better. Because of this, Choze is an artist of the people. His success is the success of his fans and other local hip hop musicians. His recognition will be Portland’s recognition. He represents the city’s best

ONE VOICE, ONE GUITAR...Cupéro

6/16/2009 01:15:00 PM Reporter: Nasty Tai Boogy 0 Responses
Cupéro, Singer/Songwriter/Rocker

Of the numerous striking qualities of Cupéro, the 19-year-old singer, songwriter and rocker, it’s the commanding presence of her voice and songs that sets her apart. Cupéro sings with a maturity and sense of permanence that belies her youth and the relatively short amount of time that she has been in the New York music scene. On her debut, self-titled EP, she sings with a passion that reveals an unshakable commitment and ambition to be a performer that transcends barriers of music, ethnicity and language.
Raised in Warwick, New York, about 65 miles north of New York City, Cupéro has been singing since she was four years old. Piano lessons began at nine and then guitar at sixteen, which for her, has been the key to unlock everything. She explains, “Since picking up the guitar, everything has fallen into place – it was the right instrument for me to begin writing songs on, and image-wise, I love it. When I’m playing guitar – that’s the essence of who I am.”

Influenced by everything from modern artists like KT Tunstall and a few classic rock artists, Cupéro saves her biggest praise for the Columbian rock artist Juanes, a winner of seventeen Latin Grammys and who has sold over ten million albums. She says, “I really admire his music and his activism, and the fact that he’s bilingual was the inspiration for me to become a bilingual artist.”

Currently enrolled at Siena College, Cupéro has been performing at various shows and benefits for organizations like SAFER (Students Active For Ending Rape), as well as Road Recovery, a drug awareness program who she wrote a song for. But clearly, her eyes are on goals to come. She states, “Right now I’m concentrating on developing a local fanbase and taking my songwriting to the next level – but I want to take it to the highest level I possibly can and win an international fanbase.” While that kind of ambition might be stretch for most artists, given the quality of songs and performances on her debut album, for Cupéro, it all seems very much possible, and within her exceptional reach.

You can purchase Cupéro music on iTunes and http://www.amazon.com/Cup%C3%83%C2%A9ro/dp/B002BVGI70/ref=sr_f3_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1244425559&sr=103-1

THEY SAY WHO IS HE? I SAY THAT'S MUTHAFUCKIN SHAKIZZY!

You know after you graduate high school all those friends you had disappeared, moved on, lost your number, your friends on facebook but never chat, then they see you in the street happy as hell to see you. Leave it for the comic strip hun. Okay? Ok.

You end up with those 5 friends (or less) that are still around and keep in contact. Shak's in my top 5 "Circle of Friends" even though he graduated two years before me lol. So I guess I'm the special one.

He's the coolest dude, laid back, and always on the grind. The total opposite of my wild, crazy, and fun personality and plus if I had too many friends like me I feel bad for the world lol.

What more can I say? I consider him a friend for life.

Hip-Hop's Dreamgirl, Deena Jonez

6/13/2009 02:59:00 PM Reporter: Nasty Tai Boogy 0 Responses
DEENA JONEZ, RAPPER
In the spirit of keeping the legacy alive of true female emcees, the likes of Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, Roxanne Shante and Salt-n-Pepper – enters Brooklyn born rapper, Deena Jonez. Frustrated with the state of hip hop and the male dominated arena Deena looks to stand out. “Its difficult being a female rapper, it’s sad because in the 90’s you had all these greats who committed to the art and now it’s like we are an endangered species…almost like we don’t exist anymore in hip hop” proclaims Jonez. Nonetheless, this budding rapper dares to bridge the gap between the female legends and the present time. Away with the salacious behavior and over sexualized lyrical content, Deena finds medium in staying true to the art form.

Rocking fresh Supras, designer fitted skinny jeans, a Gucci belt and a tight fitting graphic tee shirt – this rapper feels most comfortable. With a style reminiscent of the hipster community, she rejects the classification and insists she’s a hybrid, with all the style of a Williamsburg hipster, matched with the lyrical deftness of a classic 90s rapper, infused with the swagger of your typical flashy hip hop artist. Deena has cultivated a strong fan base whom have stuck with her since the days when she went by the name Medina which means “land of warrior” and was also once known as the slang word for Brooklyn. Yet, when the movie Dreamgirls came to theaters; Medina was inspired by the story of the lead actress - as a result, she dropped the “ME” and Deena was born.

Presently, Deena is working on her mixtapes. With each tape, fans experience the conception of new concepts – from tapes like “Dreamgirl…The life and times of Deena Jonez” where she offers listeners a journey through her quest to find herself musically and the sequel to that, For The Love of Money which illustrates her affinity for music and seeking wealth. Her latest tape, Deena Jonez Takes Contol is a remake of popular songs off the Janet Jackson multi-platinum album Control.

Not only is this female lyricist commanding attention from her fans, but she also has also got the music industry taking notice with a feature on “Spit Yo Game” off the BET show The Deal as well as features in International Connections DVD, BET’s DVD “Born to Ball” hosted by NBA player, Paul Pierce and other prominent hip hop media outlets. All in all, when I asked what she is bringing to hip hop Deena answers: “I’m bringing a breath of fresh air. I’m here to represent women, I feel like I’m the voice for them whatever emotion I am going through it is evoked in my music at the end of the day that’s what’s going to connect me to a lot of people, they can relate and understand because they feel and go through the same things.”
